Community Logistics for low-cost zero-carbon Delivery Services
The Green TLC is a Christchurch based start-up Social Enterprise with a mission to cut the cost of zero-carbon cargo cycle logistics, help build community cohesion and support the transition to sustainable lifestyles with a network of neighbourhood delivery hubs.
They have won grant funding and support from the SSE Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneur’s Start-up Programme and are facilitators for the Community Impact Challenge Race to Zero Programme.
The Community Logistics Project was inspired by the ‘transition’ hubs pioneered by Transition Streets and the micro-consolidation hubs used to improve the efficiency and sustainability of urban logistics.
‘Community Logistics Hubs’ are clusters of households all within a 5-minute walking distance of a shared delivery point hosted by a household in the hub or a nearby Community Centre.
Community Logistics
We’re on a mission to inspire and nurture a nationwide network of neighbourhood hubs so local suppliers can deliver to five or more households in one drop.
Neighbourhood Hubs
And these groups of neighbours will become ‘transition’ hubs for people to help each other with transition to sustainability.
Using maps to Inspire
Our interactive map page will glow with interest as people register to join, form or supply a neighbourhood hub.
Help turn the UK TLC Green!
A single expression of interest will make the whole of your local authority electoral ward start to glow a lovely lime green that increases in brightness and intensity as more and more people express their interest.
You can see your electoral ward/district by entering your postcode here:
https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/election-maps/gb/
Our map page www.thegreentlc.uk/yes is still in development but you can still register interest – with your consent for us to retain your postcode and contact details in a secure database – via our contact page – or by phoning or messaging us on 07915 280695.
Your postcode location will not be shared or displayed on the map and you can choose whether or not you’d like us to share your contact details with neighbouring households that register.
See the Gallery below to read our Privacy Policy/GDPR Statement.
How will it happen?
The database will be automated to let you know when a neighbouring household has also registered their interest. As soon as 5 neighbouring households register we will make contact and start the process of setting up a hub and hooking you up with local growers, makers and suppliers.
The ‘Virtual’ Supermaket
Once the hub has been set up we’ll create a ‘Virtual Supermarket’ and offer local suppliers their own ‘Department’.
Placing your orders
Orders can be placed face to face, online or by phone and The Green TLC will consolidate all the orders into one weekly delivery for each hub.
Delivering your shopping by Cargo cycle + trailer train
Deliveries will be carried out by Cargo cycles and trailers which can carry bulky and heavy loads up to 150kg just as quickly (in urban areas) as a small diesel van but without the harmful air pollution and carbon emissions.
We can do it with normal bikes…
In most cases the trailers can be towed by a normal bicycle – although we can recommend a range of options according to local need. And for heavy/bulky loads we would carry out a risk assessment and specify a cycle/trailer combination to ensure safe and legal transportation alongside other control measures such as additional training for the rider.
Trailers with built in over-run braking systems and e-assist motors can be specified so that normal cycles can be used to transport bulky and heavy loads with ease.
Growing the network…
As our network of hubs grows local Cargo Cycle Riders and Hub Co-ordinators will be recruited by the hub with HR Support from The Green TLC to ensure that both volunteer and directly employed staff are competant and appropriate pre-employment checks carried out.
